Interesting talk overheard at a coffee house
X: A pen friend told me that capitalism will fall in his lifetime. He's from the East, by the way.
Y: I highly doubt that.
X: He's also now based in Germany.
Y: Exactly, in the place where communism yielded to capitalism!
X: Hahahaha!
Y: No, seriously, I doubt that argument, especially if you have China who's just communist on paper.
X: But he gave me this analogy of a nurse and a lawyer. Both are doing hard work, yet one is paid more over the other. I mean, who are we to judge whose job is more stressful? We're all working here.
Y: I have something to counter-argue with that.
X: Hit it.
Y: See, before one becomes a lawyer, there's too much intellectual capital involved. In nursing, you get a 4-year nursing course, the rest is more of training, practice, maybe attend some seminars too and take a master's in nursing if you want to. Whereas in law, you get a 4-year undergraduate, then law school, then in some cases you need to study a few more years before you get to practice law.
X: But nurses study too even if they're already practicing.
Y: But laws can be changed...
X: But nurses need to study discoveries in science too.
Y: But science is not as fickle as law. Lawyers will need to review, study amendments so they can defend.
X: Okay. But hey, nurses save lives.
Y: I'm not undermining nurses. But lawyers do save lives too by defending clients.
X: So who are we to say who does better? Essentially, the two are doing the same thing.
Y: Ah, existential shit. But yes, I get that point too.
X: See?
Y: But I still believe comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges.
X: Okay, what about doctors to janitors? I mean, both of them have important roles too.
Y: In which I go back to the 'intellectual capital' argument: a doctor can do a janitor's job, but a janitor can't necessarily do a doctor's profession.
X: Right.
